Picasso Celebration 1973-2023

April 8th, 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso and thus places the year under the sign of the celebration of his work and his artistic heritage in France, Spain and internationally.

In Antibes:
Of the 23 volumes of Christian Zervos' Picasso catalogue, 13 are devoted to the last 20 years. This shows how rich the last two decades of the artist are in creations. This production accelerated again after 1968, between 1969 and 1972. At ninety years old, Picasso reaffirms that painting is first and foremost a matter of desire, and gives us a lesson in enthusiasm and inventions. The exuberance which in his last canvases is expressed by bright hues, and most often by large formats, testifies to the extraordinary creative power of the artist in his great age, and of his talents, often underestimated, of colorist that the exhibitions in Avignon, at the Palais des Papes, in 1970 and 1973 will remind the public. He then revisits the gallery of his familiar characters, the toreros, the musketeers, and paints, with a frenzy of young man and in extreme urgency, the paintings that seem to take shape before our eyes, as if to invite the painting «stronger than him, and that made of him what she wanted», to other adventures: the end of the beginning.
